Did you guys watch the full video from that NA guy and those MAGA hat-wearing kids? From what I’ve read and seen a lot of people were in the wrong in that situation, not just the teenagers. Apparently there were a bunch of adults who’d been shouting homophobic insults at them for the past hour so they’d been trying to sing over the sound of the insults when the Native American man walked up? Also because the video spread around the teenagers and their parents got sent a bunch of death threats.
Hello anon. You appear to have fallen for the tireless efforts of a PR team hired by rich white parents to create a positive spin in the media for these boys.
I have seen longer videos. In those videos, I have seen those boys shouting at young women walking past about “how it’s not rape if you like it” and other such awful nonsense. Bear in mind these boys were only in the area in the first place attending an anti-choice march in order to restrict reproductive rights.
The men shouting at them belong to a group called the Black Israelites. They’re well known for that exact kind of bs. But since when did one group of people shouting at you (debatable, most of their vitriol was aimed at women walking past) become an excuse to mock and intimidate another group? Only when those people aren’t white.
The longer video clearly shows these boys get worked up. Shouting and whooping and getting enraged. Maybe they were trying to drown out the insults, I don’t know. But the video also shows them begin to advance on those black men.
Nathan Phillips walked up, singing, because “that song was medicine, meant to calm them” - he wasn’t a threat. He went up to help calm everyone’s anger.
And how does the longer video show them responding? By swarming around him, up in his face, shouting and yelling, chanting build the wall, and doing tomahawk chops. There’s no context in which those very racialised intimidation tactics are okay, least of all a context in which he has calmly walked vaguely near you, singing.
That video was exactly what it looked like. It was a group of teenage white boys being racist towards a Native American elder. You can trust your own eyes on this one.
